Celebrating October 7 World Cotton Day

World Cotton Day is celebrated on October 7 every year to raise awareness about the importance of cotton.

Cotton is widely used for many different products that we commonly use. It has many positive traits that make it an ideal fabric. Its airy and comfortable texture is one of the traits that make it a preferred fabric.

But the impact of cotton is much larger than that. Cotton is grown across 75 countries on 5 continents, affecting the livelihoods of millions of workers and their families.

So when you look into the production of any cotton textile product, it includes a lot of personal history.

What events take place on World Cotton Day?

On World Cotton Day, members of the cotton community from every part of cotton’s journey come together to discuss cotton’s benefits, such as the employment it provides, its high-quality natural fiber, the state of cotton production, and other aspects of cotton.

Events take place both globally and locally. Many countries that are a part of the cotton industry attend the global event on October 7 while also having events that gather the local growers and manufacturers in their countries.

Global topics of discussion for 2022 are sustainability, a very important topic for all agricultural sectors and women in cotton, brand, and retail partnerships. While these are the main topics, the general discussion is not limited to these topics.

The global event hosted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) will also touch on the importance of the cotton industry as a whole to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations.

Why is World Cotton Day Important?

  • The growing of cotton in poverty-stricken countries provides continuous employment for people, reducing unemployment and poverty in general.
  • The fast biodegradability of cotton makes it a better option when compared to synthetic alternatives. Using cotton is better for the world as it reduces the dumping of plastics into bodies of water.
  • Apart from the fiber made from it, cotton seeds can be used to make edible oil, providing both food and fiber.
  • Cotton can grow in dry and hot climates, making it a plant that can grow in an environment where most other plants can’t.
  • As cotton has a couple of uncertainties in its future regarding production and demand, it is critical for the cotton sector to be informed about the support cotton can provide regarding economic growth and sustainable development.
  • The integration of new technologies and resources is important for the sustainability of the sector and must therefore be addressed.
  • The discussion of the empowerment of women and youth working in the cotton sector is an important part of employment and proper work as the sector develops.
